Consider the purchase of weight plates with built-in handles . Aside from their conventional use, such plates can be used much like a kettlebell; Wal-Mart sells them .

The worse are definitely those red plastic ones with a plastic screw. The sort that come with the cheap York vinyl weight sets. Crap on their own, but York make a spring clip for their 1"bars. Use those with the red plastic clips and they don't move. I've got a mix of York weights with the red plastic screw clips and others with spin locks. I've got about 80kgs (including a couple of 10 kgs), 1 barbell, 4 dumbells and a bench. They all came off ebay in several lots, all won with small bids, to a grand total of £55. I've also got 2 Rebok barbells, 2 Golds dumbells and 160kgs of steel weights (25, 10 and 5kgs), again in several ebay lots, which come to £125. The real bargain item was the Golds bars at £15 from a sports shop. They had been there for months and I made them an offer of £10 less than the asking price. It took me a couple of years to build this up. I got the Yorks first and this took a month. At the time I knew I was about to lose my job and it was difficult to find work. Some time previously I'd been out of work for 6 months and going to the gym was a financial burden hence the weights. I'd recoup the outlay if I sold them. I'm glad I got them, even though I don't use them as much now. The days of me going out in the shed when it is below freezing are gone! I can load up more than I can lift. So with patience and smart bidding, I got a reasonable selection of weights, all found within 10 miles of home, so easy to collect. One set of the York dumbells, with 12kgs of weight. came from a pub and cost 99p - bargain!

When I had a Home Gym my weights were York green cast iron with red collars tightened with a spanner, my son had the spin collar type which I had to keep tightening.
Nowadays I use Dumbbells in the Fitness Center that are rubber coated hex and range from 5 to 50 lbs. The good is that I just grab what I'm needing and not have to change the plates.
Going to the Fitness Center also means I don't have a load of stuff in my apartment, Gyms and Fitness Centers are so cheap nowadays (mine is free).

How much weight will the wooden handles hold before they snap.

I have an assortment of DBs. Spring clip, screw tightened collar (both types have plastic plates), spin on and fixed weight hex. I don't change the adjustable ones much. I use lock washers and fender washers on the spin ons which prevents the plates from spinning on the bar, but they don't come loose either. I bought one new pr of 30# ea hex, but the rest were used & came from thrift stores, garage sales, flea markets, second chance sports shops, etc. I've used some of the extra plastic plates for DIY exercise tools. Plastic is undesirable to the second chance sports sellers and cost only $0.20 per pound. You can make some very inexpensive weight tools with those. I use unthreaded black iron pipe w/ hose clamps for the bar on some of my tools instead of a wooden dowel. The handle area can be made w/ plastic pipe to avoid having a hose clamp scrape on my hands. I did make a swing bell with a broomstick handle, hose clamps and BMX grips that had 44# of plastic plates on it, but the black pipe gives me more peace of mind. I love using my assortment of DBs and DIY tools w/ the used plates. Doing exercise that I enjoy is all I need to keep me enthused.

Bruce what kind of leather did you wrap handles. Thanks I'll tell you what I did with my dumbbell handles. I bought foam, pipe-insulation, cut it so it fit between the inside plates, and duct-taped it so it wouldn't fall off. Instant thick-grip handles.

Cheaper than the leather Bruce loves to use and really good. I think Bruce has leather riding chaps that he cuts up

When I used my dumbbells, I just tightly wrapped a soft cord along the handles to adjust the grip and fixed the cord ends with glue. It worked fine.

Bruce what kind of leather did you wrap handles. Thanks That's non-padded tennis racket wrap. I first wrapped the handles with double stick foam tape to give it a bit of a cushion, and then I wrapped the tennis racket wrap over that. If I were to use leather, I would use chap leather.

Slit hose pieces are another way to thicken a dumbbell's grip area; they can quickly be removed . Experiment with multiple grip sizes(place a larger slit hose over a smaller one)

On Bruce's advice I put tennis racket wrap around my hook handles. Works a treat. I keep meaning to do the same on my dip bars.
