More options for shin training:
Self Resistance: Sit on a chair and rest the heel of the working leg on the floor with the foot pointed. Place the other foot on top of the working foot. Now pull the working foot up while resisting with the other foot.
With Weights: Use a DARD, I made one from pipe years ago and it worked just fine, unfortunately I cannot find the plans on the web anymore, but you can buy them also, either way is very effective.
That alternating calf/shin raise in the Atlas course is a traditional kung fu exercise--who knows, maybe they got it from the Atlas course--and it was taught by both Eddie Ivester (RIP) and Al Colangelo (RIP). It's a good one.
Funny I just looked on amazon and got no hits for DARD...found out they call it a "tib bar" nowadays....Bob Gajda must be rolling over in his grave. I'll keep right on calling it a DARD in Bob's memory, but if you want to buy one you'll have to call it a tib bar. Don't ask me which brand is best, all I ever used was my homemade one.
Ah, just found this:
The one I made was simpler because it was all 3/4" inside diameter pipe for standard plates. I also had the plates out on the end of the lever bar, with a pipe cap on the end and a collar on the inside.

I do toe raises off my steps or with my back to a wall. When You do the one with Your back against a wall the further out Your feet the hard. I can't remember which is harder but without shoes and with shoes can make it harder or easier. I do them without shoes.
