...just what the headline says I'm big on paleo, have been for many years now. I tried keto, and it worked (and healed my gut), but it feels too restrictive, at least some times (and those times are getting more). I also tried vegan, for a year, and then again, after a while, for a half year. And my performance in sport and combatives went way downhill, after an initial increase. But cutting out an entire, natural food group just isn't for me. Now, what I'm noticing that my appetite for meat has been declining for a while (this might be a side effect of my Reiki initiation), and my palate really likes soy products much more than it did when I was vegan. And seeing that spermidine is contained in tofu, tempeh and soy milk as well as legumes, I think what I'll be doing is eat more of that. Michael Pollan's "Eat real food, not a lot, mostly plants" is viewed as helpful by longevity experts like Valter Longo. And then, other experts are saying the exact opposite. To name just two of them: Dr. Paul Saladino says plants are basically toxic, with the exception of fruit (because the plants want them to be eaten so they can spread), and Mark Sisson says vegetarians are deficient in carnosine (a fusion of beta-alanine and histidine that is abundant in meat) and taurine. Hm. Maybe peganism (vegan paleo with meat not as main ingredient, but as a condiment) is something that might be helpful. So, mostly plants (including soy products), plus eggs and a some meat. It's somewhat frustrating.

Hm. Maybe peganism (vegan paleo with meat not as main ingredient, but as a condiment) is something that might be helpful. So, mostly plants (including soy products), plus eggs and a some meat. It's somewhat frustrating. I have developed my menu to reflect what is made bold in your post. The meat I can eat most often is fish. I probably average 6 eggs per week +or-, but I don't usually eat them every day. Sometimes though, it feels good to binge on meat or eggs, so I'm not strict with myself on ....... well much of anything really. Lots of fruit and lots of veggies though makes me feel best. I like wild blueberries, pineapple and/or apple or other fruit for first meal of the day. I like to eat a lot of lettuce. I use it in place of toxic gluten breads and to scoop up a bowl of organic beans or whatever. Pinto and Northern beans are my faves. Other favorite veggies are beets, asparagus, avocado, celery, wild rice and lentils. I avoid soy - I don't know about other countries, but unless it is absolutely organic, pure tempeh, I never eat any soy, mostly due to agri-chemicals, but I'm not sure that soy is healthy anyway unless fermented (tempeh)? Almost forgot ....... potatoes! I eat a lot of potatoes. Sweet potatoes, yellow potatoes, red potatoes. I keep steamed ones in the fridge for a quick small meal or snack, cold or hot, with nothing but Celtic sea salt. (I no longer use Himalayan Pink sea salt because I read that it contains lead(?) and that the Celtic sea salt is most healthy of the economic sea salts.) Most important is drinking lots of WATER. (:note to self) One more thing; I also love blackest coffee and wine - not at the same time, of course.

Thanks, Potatohead! I love black coffee and (white) wine, too! And my wife an I have just finished a delicious lunch: a nice Buddha bowl, filled with home-made pinto bean salad, aragula, hummus, mushrooms and hot salsa (also home-made). And what can I say? I LOVE that kind of food. It makes me full and satisfied.

I hated how confusing food is for us humans for years and years, if you want to know what is right for YOU start a journal and jot down the foods you eat and how you feel after, there's too many schools of thought on food and if you really concentrate on how it effects you, you will be able to produce a list of food that doesn't cause any discomfort or issues, until we humans can decide what we really are supposed to eat it's best to just eat foods that don't hurt you immediately after eating them, imo.
For example I hear people talk about eating a high fat diet, I can't agree with their philosophy PERSONALLY because anything over 30 grams of fat and I'm done for the day I can't move, I feel sick and I have a bad case of indigestion and heartburn. Some days I can tolerate a lot of meat others I can't, eating cheese for me is like sipping on a bottle of acid (painful stuff), Bread hurts my stomach too, I can eat oats on their own and I can drink milk on it's own but if I mix the two it's game over for me for the day. Food is so individual and as for longevity I have seen people live to their late nineties on a diet of pretty much nothing but hot dogs and spaghetti.

Dairy was the last food type I quit. I love cheese, but it had to go. I eat the foods that would have been eaten around 1800 or prior.
I avoid foods that have been sprayed with chemicals or processed beyond how they could have done in 1800. Mostly, that means nothing I buy has more than water and/or salt added.

Kraut, your post sums it up, a lot of confusion. I have been trying different diets for probably 30 years, and not sure much difference has been made overall from how I might be if I never did any of them. The longest I did any of them was keto for about six months. It's the only thing that helped me burn belly fat, but I neglected water and became very dehydrated. I do believe plants are toxic after reading a lot, and personal experience. I could never eat another grain, vegetable or bean and never miss them. Fruit is tasty, but I never "crave" it. I could probably live fine on meat and potatoes. Part of the problem is we're all basically kids in a candy story, more variety than ever available in human history.
