I always liked doing pullovers but stopped doing them for quite some time. They were advised as being good for rib cage expansion by old time writers. Many modern day fitness writers say that bones can't be enlarged so the movement was nothing to be recommended. Regardless of what it does for the rib cage, I tried the movement again today and I again felt what I liked about them, They stretch the lats and the serratus real well. Does anyone else here do them?

Deuce I was playing around with them because I always liked them. I liked them in the past with DBs. I was using a KB. I actually got sore from doing them in my lats.

I tried them on a pullover machine but I got a sharp pain in my sternum that I imagine was something like the famous sternum punch by JP. I read that some people can get a hernia in that spot from doing machine pullovers. I'm thinking that maybe I had/have a muscle imbalance somewhere or I'm simply not built for machine pullovers? I've done them using bands attached to a hook overhead. I have used the Sierra Hook handles or a strong dowel a bit longer than shoulder width as a handle. Also with no handle with palms facing each other which might be useful for somebody with a shoulder problem. You can also do this exercise lying flat on your back with the bands attached to a bed leg or something. At the moment I'm doing a pullover with a bullworker. Similar to the pic below except I sit on a bedside cabinet and put one end of the the bullworker in my crotch but underneath my balls. I prefer this to sitting on the floor. It also means I can pull down in more of an arc while keeping my back straight.

I did them in my first years with a light weighted barbell. I was told it should be a breathing exercise and the old timers did it after breathing squats. My rib cage got bigger and even today my lower ribs stick out like Bob Hoffman's here. It's not attractive.

Quite like the exercise, I used to do it with a light db for ribcage expansion, I overdid it the first time and was in agony that night, crawling downstairs for aspirirn. I like it with a heavy dbell, bent arms for lats, triceps and chest but I also like straight arm pulldowns with a cable, very similar but you can really focus on the detail and squeeze the muscles.

The way I do them is with my shoulders laying across the bench with a DB or a KB. I have even done them with Bruce's bands. I always felt the ones I do in my lats. Yeah that Bob Hoffman one is not for me. Here is a video that shows different versions with cables, DBs, and a bar.

Use to do them but never really got a good feel for them. During the gym days I would do them but never got serious with it. There are better options to work the rib cage that are beneficial. It's not for everyone.

Thank you Michael and Bruv. I want to try this next. The behind-the-head position is a favorite while holding a stone and moving around.

I do high rep pullovers using a weight plate with built-in handles . But I haven't achieved the promised 50" chest .

Pullovers are an essential upper body 'tie in' exercise that have always been a part of my training. When performed strictly and slowly, utilizing the proper deep breathing technique, they'll hit just about every major and minor muscle in the upper body, plus give great benefits to the respiratory system.

Pullovers for chest. I've never thought about this before, but it makes sense if you try it.

Thank you Michael and Bruv. I want to try this next. I don't really see the point of the pullover here, the reaistance is straight down, the movement is pulling the weight over the shoulder. Looks a bad movement to me, like shrugs with a roll at the top. The rest of the movement looks ok though. Does this jabroni even know what he is doing? Sure, they ALL have certificates these days and they all know everything there is to know about everything exercise. But really, none of them know nothing about no damn exercise science. I might trust this ahole to polish my car while it sits outside my gym, but that's about it.

It didn't feel BAD, but (for me) it's not going to replace just doing kb goblet squats and then lying on a bench to do pullovers with the kettlebell or something else. Unless of course I have a kettlebell, but not a bench.
