It seems we always look for clues for these outliers of longevity. There are none. The one thing it seems they all have in common is they eat “ just enough”, don’t stress over the perfect diet, have a good emotional support system, and enjoy what they eat ( and in some cases smoke and drink). They don’t feel guilty for eating a donut, or even a gingerbread cookie..😀. Look at the recently passed Betty White. She liked hotdogs, a shot of vodka, and not too keen on greens. Stressing over food choices can in no way be beneficial
Also, a sense of purpose helps.
I think a lot of longevity is simply genetics.
By making good choices ( epigenetics) we do have the ability to enhance the quality of our lives.
But the actual longevity part, maybe not so much.
My .05 cents.

Genetics play 90% deffo, an example of where living healthier saved someone though would be someone like Kevin smith who went vegan after the worst kind of heart attack you can have, not saying vegan is the healthiest option either I'm sure he would of been just as well if he ate lean meat occasionally.
Another example being my grandad who had heart problems in his early 70's and was overweight, switched to a whole foods diet lower in carbs due to pre-diabetes, started taking statins and aspirin, wears compression socks and years later he walks on average 3 miles a day and shows no sign of slowing down.
Rather than looking at it as "How can I live as long as possible?" maybe we should look at it as "What am I doing that is killing me and how can I stop doing it?".

Bad genes or not, I thought "genetic expression" was influenced by environmental factors? So, if I wolf down Big Macs and french fries all day and top it off with drinking and smoking...my risk is the same governed solely by genetics?

Healthful choices(whatever they are) likely increase your odds to make it to 90. Again I'm guessing, favorable genetics is required. to reach 100+ .

When plotting your strategy for living to be a very old turd, don’t forget the financial side of it and that you’ll be able to afford being a very old turd. It won’t be fun if you can’t afford to pay someone to change your diaper making you have to do the shitty job.

Good post MBS My oldest living brother is almost 90 and never did anything special for his health Still in good health, doesn't exercise, eats pretty much what he wants, has a few drinks and doesn't worry about how long he will live

In the end, I think it's just the luck of the draw Some people take care of themselves and die young anyway Some do nothing for their health and live long lives There's no rhyme or reason to it

MBS I think your five cents is more like priceless. You have summarized it very well. Another thing I noticed is that they are almost always slight of build. Not heavy in the sense they are not fat but they are also not carrying a lot of muscular bodyweight either

Everyone likes to focus on diet and exercise for long life, but according to the findings in the Blue Zones there is a lot a lot more than that to consider - it's a lifestyle, a way of living that brings contentment that isn't rushed that the centenarians they studied had in common. A bit of an eye opener. A lot to think about there in light of many of our fast paced lifestyles. Here's a synopsis. The book delves a lot deeper into these areas. Link: Power 9
