Almost forgot the most important part of that story. When I started, I just wanted to run 1 mile, not walk, not jog. Once I did that, I went for two miles, etc, etc. Eventually, I was running with the guy who ran the Y and he encouraged me to run in a race. I had no goal or plan to do that when I began. I just wanted to run 1 mile with ease, but I became obsessed and fascinated with the way it made me feel and think.

I had a friend who once ran the NYC marathon because the guys in the firehouse all wanted to do it and convinced him to do it as well. This guy was a big beer drinker and smoker but he committed himself and trained hard.......giving up smoking and drinking while training. Come marathon day he was ready and completed it....with his wife waiting at the finish line with a case of cold beer and a carton of cigarettes !

..... After that I too mostly ran around 3 miles, I never ran competitively, just to enjoy it Yeah, well, no one could call my speed "competing".

Thanks, Mr. P. and Billfish for your encouragement advice, and stories I really appreciate it. Next time I'm walking ill tray and mix in a small bit of jogging and see how the knees and hips hold up. I like the idea of doing a bit of jogging even if it's for short distances it would be great to have more fitness to push the nieces and nephews on Go-carts, play catch, and the like without getting winded.

To save your knees, shoes that cushion heel strike are most important. Jogging on soft ground or sand is ideal. The benefit of going faster than a walk is to the cardio-vascular system. Remember, more calorie burn of fat happens at walking or slow speed and more glucose burning occurs as you speed up.

Yesterday spent about 45 minutes in a normal commercial gym supporting a person I work with. I went on various machines such as an elliptical machine to warm up various weight machines for the upper body and a Rogue Ski Erg, treadmill, and exercise bike. On the Cardio equipment, I tried to exercise with bouts of intensity. With the weight machines, reps were fairly high and just tried to burn the muscles.
I never used a Ski erg and had to ask an instructor how to use it the machine was brilliant really worked the upper half of the body and was very good for cardio. With the tension, it felt better than heavy hands, and developed anaerobic fitness I think it was like sparring in boxing. Funny enough I have never seen anybody use the machine. To explain it's like a rowing machine standing upright with two cables that when you use it you use a skiing motion.
The gym can be fairly full and the last few times I've been there I've played it safe because I didn't want to get injured. One of the good things about commercial gyms other than getting out of the house and the good-looking women. I feel it's a very safe way to exercise but it mightn't be the most function way to exercise.

Hi just to say my firewall settings have stopped me from reaching this forum for a while. I have been walking and exercising in the meantime. Wishing everyone success with the exercise program.

Hi Moxohol thanks for the quality article. I've been a bit busy this week have gone to a neighbor who is an energy healer he does bioenergy (sort of like reiki). Been busy going to him 4 nights this week. Whenever I go their it improves my emotional health and I can feel the energy working and I feel like a more energized person over the last few days. The Chi gung thread was very interesting but I don't have the time to practice chi gung so about twice a year I go to an energy healer to balance my energy and remove blockages. I would be interested in what people think of modalities like reiki? I've got a bit of time today and tomorrow so am going to do a bit of exercise these days.

Reiki? Witchcraft or New Age stuff to me really. Tried barefootin on earth to get that supposed geomagnetic field but all I got was dirty feet & healthier arches.
I got more mileage doing 100 alternating snapkicks while doing a static reverse pushup hold watching TV. It gets u breathing hard.

At least from doing the barefootin thing you have a interesting story to tell. For me, the Bioenergy works I can feel it working and I only go around twice a year so it doesn't cost me alot of money or time. I am with you on the exercise part a good diet and exercise have been scientifically proven to promote good physical and mental health, that's why I'm exercising and trying to improve my diet. I practice other spiritual stuff instead of doing tai chi, gung, reiki or energy work that I also think has been scientifically proven to work such as mindfulness, acceptance, and gratitude. I also try and reflect on my week.

They are intimately involved with the Krebs Cycle, Autophagic System & Electron Transport Chain. The latter 3 pathways biologically determine heath & longevity. Personally, I'd opt out of reiki altogether in lieu of some more satisfying nookie but that's just me.
