I just got my Atlas stuff out. The book says the pic was taken in the mid 30's which would make Atlas about 43ish. He looks good. Tan and fit. Can't upload the pic & pages from the book right now, but Roman says "...it was an amateur photo, no special light reflectors and was taken after exercising on the beach."

Kahanamoku was very accomplished and well rounded as an athlete and person; A Freemason, Shriner, 5 time Olympic medalist in 3 Olympics, businessman, actor, and law enforcement officer. Listed as 6'1" and 190 lbs, you can see his ab's through his shirt.

Duke Kahanamoku was the Charles Atlas of Hawaii. Actually, that just popped into my head 'cause he had a build similar to Atlas, but, as far as I know, no one ever compared him to Atlas, and his physique wasn't his claim to fame, especially there in Hawaii where every one who swims and surfs is well built.

Oh. One other little tidbit. Queen Liliuokalani wrote Hawaii's most memorable song - Aloha Oe.

The long gone golden voices of the Islands - Alfred Apaka and Haunani Kahalewai.
Alfred Apaka and I went to the same high school. Not at the same time, of course - Roosevelt.

This was the statue that inspired Charles Atlas - Hercules in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.
