This is my favorite pic...... I once read that this picture and the one in the post above from the catalog were both taken on the same day with just an ordinary ol' camera. I wonder how old he was in those pics?

Duke Kahanamoku was the Charles Atlas of Hawaii. He was an Olympic swimming champion and the man who introduced the world to surfing. He was alive when I was growing up in Hawaii, and I remember him as being venerated and designated as Hawaii's First Citizen.

I wonder how old he was in those pics? I have to check to be sure, but I believe Roman said in the book 'Yours in Perfect Manhood' that Atlas was 46 for these pics. I saw these actual pic's framed at the Atlas office in 1980. Each was big, like 16"x20", and even though black and white, the detail was excellent.

I don't believe he eats as little as he says in this video (@3:05), but who knows. He is 57/58 here and looks heavy around the jawline.

So is Hawaii a duchy or a kingdom, m8? I think it is a grouping of volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean, m8.

So is Hawaii a duchy or a kingdom, m8? Hawaii was a Kingdom until the end of the 19th century when the U.S. took it over. Duke Kahanamoku just happened to be named "Duke" by his parents. One of his brothers they named "Sergeant". A little tidbit, here: David Kalakaua was one of Hawaii's longest reigning kings. He wrote a book called The Legends and Myths of Hawaii which I read and thoroughly enjoyed. It wasn't just about Hawaiian legends, but it was also a history of Hawaii and notable people, a description of the islands and people as they were during his time, and personal reflections on his own life and his monarchy. The nobility of Hawaii were super educated. He was a brilliant writer, and reading his book was like reading Charles Dickens. BTW, the Iolani palace in Honolulu is the only royal palace on U.S. soil.

He did look great. Even today his advert photos look better than the current bloated monsters. He looked well, too. Agreed... Michael...brothersteve posted above that he believes he had read that Atlas was 46 in those pics.

Oh. One other little tidbit. Queen Liliuokalani wrote Hawaii's most memorable song - Aloha Oe. One last tidbit (the hits just keep coming). Duke Kahanamoku was sheriff of Honolulu for almost 30 years.
