Bodyfat percentages done via skin calipers in the early 80's were done on the school football team. What was interesting is that the percentages all over the body were different. One may have 2% on the arms, but 12% on the abs, etc. All calculations were put into a formula to obtain the individuals overall bodyfat %.
Each individuals genetic fat distribution all over ones body is unique.

Is extremely low body fat healthy? Does it lead to a longer life? Should older folks stay extremely lean? My doctor says no. BUT, almost all the extremely old men I have seen, and most women, are all on the very thin side although I don't know their BF %'s. Their BMI's are low.
Is it just for vanity, like 20 inch arms?

Lower bodyfat means higher GH output. GH in adults is meant to recycle old cells which is a survival mechanism during periods of starvation. GH isn't released in a fed state or with 2 tons of fun.

I store more fat on the flanks than on the abs. So I can have a good looking stomach but still grab too much fat at the sides.

My old karate buddy Tom, who used to post on Bronze Bow forum, once shared something great, "How much you eat determines if you'll get fat, your genetics determines where it stores." Like the fat guy whose back of his neck looks like a pack of franks. Jeff Cavaliere shared his trouble spot is lower back, near Whiffet's flanks. I've got multiple spots in trunk area.

A few years after getting into working out without much gains, I remember kids in junior high with thick arms and thighs, but normal looking waists who looked rugged because of their mass. It was fat, but they had muscle under the fat and knew how to use their weight to advantage. I was always lean everywhere until about age 42 when I started to see a bike tire forming around my waist where my bellybutton is. Due to work, I was down to 1 huge meal a day for some years and not a good one which dwindled my once great metabolism (along with age). I would go 10 hours without even a pee break, it was insane.

Always noticed a great number of smokers, who were lean (probably because of the nicotine's appetite suppression), with very good vascularity, even over age 40.
I was never very vascular no matter how lean I got.

This was me last year around this time at age 65, when I was training like a crazy man (that turning age 65 thing), sporting a 2-pack at about 18 percent bodyfat.
July 22, 2020 at 172 lbs. i'm 5-6 lbs. heavier now and I'm sure higher body fat percentage. If I try hard, I can probably still squeeze out a 2-pack photo.

Brothersteve,
My last DXA-Scan BF test was on 6/1/2020, about 6 weeks prior to the photo I shared. I measured in at 18.6 percent body fat at BW of 168.7 lbs. i have a larger version of that photo that I previously shared here last year.
Interesting is that just prior to that test (done in mid-afternoon), I jumped on my Nokia digital scale before going for my test. I brought it to work, stripped down just like I do when using it in the morning and registered 170.6 lbs. weight, 9.3 percent body fat and 55.2 percent hydration level (higher than normal). Then, I went next door in my office building which is a weight loss coaching business where they sell fake food supplements and provide coaching. The business is owned by a couple guys who I had gotten to know well. They have a higher-powered digital scale that measures weight and body fat. I jumped on it and came in at 171.0 lbs. with 9.5 percent body fat. It doesn't measure hydration level. Didn't strip down butt naked for this weigh-in but had on gym shorts and a t-shirt so we subtracted 1.0 lb. for that.
As you can see, there was quite a difference between these two readings and what the DXA-scan reported. I consider the DXA-scan to be the most accurate although I'm sure there's variation with it too. Again, my hydration level was higher than normal even though I tried not drinking an excessive amount of water that morning. All three weigh-in's took place between 2:00 pm and 2:30 pm.
Bottom line - as an older turd, it really doesn't matter. If you want to feel good, drink a lot of water and then jump on one of them home BIA BF scales. If you want to be humbled woth something closer to the truth, pay for a DXA-Scan.

I don't remember you sharing the bigger version of this picture. Anyway, good job. What were you doing for your shoulders at the time of the picture? I remember Parker one time said all you need for shoulders was presses. But as soon as I stayed steady doing just presses and some snatches my shoulders became a weak point. But with your picture and the lighting Your shoulders look like a strong point.
