This morning I decided I wanted to do pulldowns instead of pullups. But I don't have a cable machine. So I said to myself," What would Bruce do?". I didn't have an orange squeezer so I put two anchors about shoulder width apart on my pullup bar. I loaded up each anchor with Bruce's chest expander size bands and the two Hook handles. I had to kneel down and sit back on my calves because my pullup bar is only so high. I did 15 reps each time I did them. They felt really good and I liked this.

Thanks for sharing. We're only limited by our imagination. I've done horizontal rows using Bruce's stuff, another way to get some pulling action when we want a break from the tougher pull-ups.

When I first started to do pullups/chins and could not do them well or for numbers, I would do chair chins - a bar on the backs of 2 chairs with my feet tucked under enough to hold more of my bodyweight and it worked great.

I made this ceiling mounted pulldown setup a couple years ago. The handles are attached to 1" webbing strands which are pulled down through heavy carabiners. These are mounted onto a 3/8" eye screw which is screwed deeply into the center of a ceiling joist. These handles are directly over my slant bench.

Two methods for attaching bands to a bar.

(edit for clarity)

Michael, I bought a hook connected to a pulley wheel a few years back from a hardware store. Thechook was not big enough for what I had in mind, so I simply connected it to a chain, then connected the chain to my pull up bar and put a thin, but strong rope around the pulley, with caribiners at each end. This home made simple pulley system is great. You have to sit a bit on front of it as opposed to direcly underneath, but been using it succesfully for years. When not in use, I just slide it to one side of the bar.

It's true you don't have to do pull-ups.
But, if you want to be able to do pull-ups, you got to do pull-ups.
If you can do pull-ups, you can do other pulling exercises, easier.

Yeah if You want to get good at doing something You have to do it. I like pullups but don't believe, for myself, more and full range of motion is better. I seen a saying somewhere but can't remember where. It goes something like this," Weights don't work the muscle, the Muscle works the weights". I know we're talking about pullups but same concept. If I can feel something on the inside of my shoulder or I feel pain with any exercise I'm not doing it or I'm doing it in a way where I don't feel pain. When You do years of physical work You can get wear and tear unlike someone that hasn't. , No Brag, Just Fact. Will I do pullups again? Yeah, but when ever I feel something that's not right I stop certain exercises for a while. Pullups didn't cause it because I do them in a more biomechanic matter. I never seen a difference in other pulling exercises if I didn't do pullups. I've never been able to do many pullups at a time. The most I have gotten when I was chasing reps was 15 reps.

I throw a towel over a sturdy door. Grasp the ends, squeeze the door with my legs & PULL.
