I'm an analytical junkie both in the rat race when I was working and in my fitness pursuits. I can't help myself. Anyway, today I did a workout I hadn't done in a long time - my classic Pierini Fitness HeavyHands 7-movement medley workout. I have a video explaining it on my YouTube channel if anyone is interested. It was tough but I did it for a total of 30 minutes. Capturing my workout stats as I normally do, I decided to compare it to some other workouts I've done in the past to see how it stacked up as far as calories burned, average heart rate and maximum heart rate during the workout. My comparison was of these workouts: (1) HeavyHands 7-movement medley using a pair of 5-lbs. dumbbells for 30 minutes. (2) 24kg KB two-hand swing for 500 swings in 22:38 - I have this workout posted on my YouTube channel. It, too, was very tough. (3) My last running workout - it's been a couple months since I've ran. I need to get back on that saddle. (4) My last 100 burpees timed workout. Here's how these various cardiovascular activities stack up:
Make no mistake about it, it's hard to beat running but not everyone has the ganas to do it. The analysis indicates more relative calories burned for the two-hand swing workout but sustaining it for the running workout duration would be rough. Burpees, well you got to be a beast to do them for 55 minutes. My experience is that brisk walking burns about half the calories as a running workout. Of course, it depends on the pace. I hope this is interesting for at least one of you. Below is a PDF of the image which if downloaded may be easier to view. PIERINI FITNESS WORKOUT STATS FOR 4 DIFFERE....pdf (76.14 KB) to upper case

Any interest in stats for a HeavyHands walk for 55+ minutes? That would be hard but I can train to get in better HeavyHands conditioning so maybe one day. I'm averaging 53 pumps per movement with both sides completed counting as one pump for the alternating arm movements. When I was in better HeavyHands workout shape, I average 60 pumps per minute. The shoulder fatigue is the limiting factor. I'm walking at about a 4.0 mph pace.

To continue the HH walk for the 55 minutes ease up as necessary with the arm pumps

So because You said it's hard to beat running, Do You feel calories burned is the most important stat? The max and average heart rate are pretty close except for the Medley.

Michael, not necessarily although I believe calories burned are important and the reason many people run/walk or engage in some fitness activity described as cardiovascular. Based on the limited activities included in my brief comparison, for me, I wouldn't be able to sustain the pace of the 24kg KB swing workout or the burpees workout at the pace done for, say, 30 minutes, but I would be able to do so for the running. Obviously, conditioning for the activity is important but based on my experience, running can be sustained at a level of effort longer than the other two activities because of different fatigue factors kicking. Don't know if I explained myself sufficiently but this is my reply to your question. By the way, shoulders are extremely sore this morning, DOMS-like, from the HeavyHands workout. It had been a very long time since I last did this workout. It's definitely a keeper. I've known that but what I don't know if why I don't do it more often.

I get what you're saying and know You like running. I just look at length of a training session different than You as to the benefits and risk/ reward.

Not sure if You ever seen this article before but I thought You would like it.
