This past month or so i was getting bored of the push pull legs bodyweight routine I have been following for the past few months, so decided to pull out my cheap chest expander that i bought a few years ago from Ebay but had never used . Pretty much everyday for the past month i have been doing around 5 to 8 moves for 3 sets of 10 with the expander and my body has took on a much more dense , angular more compact look and pretty similar to how i looked when using kettlebells many years ago which is a look i much prefer .
I was wondering if any of you men have used an expander and what results you noticed ?
I will definitely be keeping up with the expander from now on !!

How's it going Stuke you alright mate . I've been training for about 14 years now, I started off with weight training but quickly realised that i didn't enjoy it plus it made me slow and sluggish . I have been doing bodyweight plus isometrics, DVR, DSR'S for the past 13 years now and in that time I have also used kettlebells which I loved but they really messed up my back so i had to give them up . Now for most of this year I've been doing a push pull legs split with just bodyweight and have put on some decent size but the past couple months I found it boring basically (not a fan of routines) so decided to whip out the expander and even though i have lost a little size i am much more dense and solid looking which I love.

Hey Baz Great news on your accomplishments, I myself own a steel spring expander but have never used it exclusively for a time. Maybe one day i will, who knows. All the best. Keith.

Nice one baz. Good stuff, I am always interested in what people have found works forcthem, particularly if it is not the usual. I used to work in a Weider shop here in Leeds and we would get a lot of big guys in. The ones who had size with no shape and bug guts never impressed me, I don't think being as big as possible is usually best, so I can understand you feel better a bit lighter.

Good stuff, Baz. The expander is the most underrated piece of gear. There's a strandpulling forum somewhere on the Net that I used to post into years ago. Plenty to get into.
In the meantime, if you would like to get any further equipment, grab yourself The Hook from some guy who posts on here, I think. Names Bruce, from memory. Top gear, top service.
I assume your set is a metal springset, rubber strands are a step-up, in my opinion. But you have to be a bit more careful with them, because any failure results in a handle or broken strand colliding with the side of your head, whereas metal springs simply return to rest. For that reason, I recommend goggles or at least safety glasses when using them.
In saying that, the only time I ever had a failure with Hook strands was when I grossly over-stretched them. And I mean "grossly".
Don't buy Lifeline. Although some trainers have had a good run with them, I certainly did not. Their quality is all over the place. Bungee cord is good. The cloth covering on them stops them from over-stretching. You can buy several meters and loop them without the handles, for a bit of fun.
There's a great variety of metal springsets to be found on the Net. Look up "Expanderkrank" on google. The German guy there built an enormous monster of a springset and used to sell springs as well. I don't know if he still is. But once you have a couple handles, any springs can be loaded onto them.

I have been using The Hook solely with a few basic chest expander movements, a power twister (bendy bar) with just a few basic movements, along with bodyweight squats in the morning, and some grip work in the evening and have been getting good results. I'm not going to give up my barbells, dumbbells, bench, and rack anytime soon, but when I compare the amount of space the former takes up than the latter, it does gets me wondering a bit.
Many wrestlers stayed fit touring on the road with pushups, bodyweight squats, and a chest expander.

Strand pulling strengthens up the entire shoulder girdle including rotator cuffs which currently been giving me problems. Builds up the sinews more than anything I found. I anchored a towel to the door jam & pulled like hell. Worked everything like a chest expander in my opinion & really helps with torque & rear delts too.

When I had surgery on my five-degree separation in my left shoulder I did chest expander exercises to rehab. They only gave me so long with my therapist so I did this on my own. I used the Lifeline chest expander, which I would not recommend because I had some snap on me. But the did the job at the time. I got 3 different size bands from Bruce and one is the expander size. If I had Bruce's stuff back in 2007 I don't think I would have stopped using them. Bands, strands, or whatever someone wants to call them, give a way different feel than weights, self-resistance, isometrics, etc... I use Bruce's bands and like them.
The way I look doesn't change much except if I'm only using kettlebells. Never just used bands or chest expanders but I do use them injunction with other things. When I do a band bicep exercise I learned from Bruce, my biceps feel harder. I like the muscle endurance I get from bands.

Yielding isometrics with heavy resistance bands is a nice workout addition.

I feel the need to expand my original post on this thread in regards to pulling on a lanyard anchored to my bathroom door. Specifically, I have webbing latched through the doorjam & closed. I loop a towel thru the webbing & assume a perpendicular stance. I keep my elbows in tight to my sides & pull like hell. Then, I switch sides. I found I got better contractions by shoring up the side of wall with firm sofa cushions placed sideways. I rest my shin against the cushions with the lead foot tucked under them & then pull like hell. Doesn't seem to affect my spine much like deadlifts. I got the idea from Zass & the Great Gama.

I think they are great Baz and use them consistently. They do fill out your musculature in ways that weights don't get at. I also used to like them for grappling because they work force curves you don't really exercise normally. Many world class arm wrestlers use them to develop tendon and pulling strength in addition to weights. Fast forwarding to when I am really old, I think they will always be a mainstay. They feel good, they work, and they don't hurt my joints. They actually make them feel better.
