A friend posted this on another forum. Sad news, but he'd been in the hospital the last few days and on his Facebook page he wrote about water retention, kidney problems and future surgery on a knee that was giving him fits. He has a lot of YouTube videos featuring the greats from years past.

These former bodybuilders from the golden age don't age well or live long for practicing such a healthy lifestyle that is supposedly conferred by bodybuilding? Why bother getting jacked if ur gonna die statistically like everyone else? I had to ditch practicing Tri-isometrics & switch to aerobic conditioning. Best damn decision I made training wise. I feel all my nagging injuries, past & present, mend better & faster. Wish I could go beyond the Ethiopian bodybuilder weight class though?

Yes really sad
Mox I posted once that there are never jacked people in nursing homes or making it to 100. They all appear to be lower body weight people. Frank Zane has said that as you age you should try to be as light as possible.

Very sad news, Ric was really friendly and had a great channel. I will miss his videos and sad to know another legend has left us.
RIP Ric.

Know what you mean about focussing on aerobic conditioning, and so glad you did not call it 'cardio' as I hate that term. I am slowly switching, though I will still be doing a couple of full body workouts a week. From what I have seen a lot of bodybuilders would still do regular aerobic activity, but I do think what Frank Zane said is right. To this day, one of the most impressive physiques I have seen was on a climber at the gym. My friend said he was skinny like a rabbit(?) but I was far more impressed by the lean, sinewy and muscular look.

It's a routine I plagiarized off the Internet & tweaked for my own use. 3 different types of isometrics are performed tandemly for any 1 particular exercise used: Overcoming, yielding, then co-contractions (flexing). The routine is published on my workout journal here. I use to do the garden variety calisthenics through out the day: pull ups, chest dips, handstands, & pistols but opted in for isometrics because I can't do inverted or horizontal movements due to injuries.

I'm down with the Bruce Lee look too. *WAAAAAAW!*———*Ka-POW!*

He said: "Frank Zane has said that as you age you should try to be as light as possible." Within reason though.

Their overall lifestyle is healthier than someone else that doesn't do anything. There are a lot of other variables which I don't want to get into. Don't think because you are doing cardiovascular training you're going to live longer than someone else. It may give you a better chance but that's not written in stone. Nothing wrong with a combination of strength, hypertrophy, and cardiovascular training. Do what you like but remember it doesn't feel good when you get kicked when you're down. Ric told the true about everything in his life.

Dorian Yates went that route. On his Joe Rogan podcast he said he's doing yoga and biking now.

Nothing wrong with a combination of strength, hypertrophy, and cardiovascular training. Do what you like but remember it doesn't feel good when you get kicked when you're down. Ric told the true about everything in his life. Nothing is a sure thing in life but I do think it's possible to put the odds in my favor as long as OTHER factors are observed. Nature doesn't operate in a vacuum & neither does human physiology. It works in systems...pathways...inter-dynamics. Just other names for "homeostasis". The case of famed running author, James Fixx, illustrates this point nicely. Fixx ran many marathons & definitely had the correct body composition. Yet, he died of a heart attack at age 48. How can this be if he did all that heavy cardio that science says is beneficial? His poor genetics aside, it can be summed up this way: his diet killed him. He "carb loaded" frequently prior to numerous marathons by stuffing his face with cookies & pasta. Diet affects the epigenetics, & by extension, gene expression. Turning on the right genes is essential but it's not happening by just a magic bullet alone. It's a process. A plan. It's like saying mustard is not the main course but u do like a little on ur hot dog.
