Watched this morning.
Makes me want to do specialized training for a full year and travel to Scotland and lift The Dinnie Stones.

There's three of these films; one about Scotland, one about Iceland and one on Basque stone sports. I think the Basque one, which is the shortest, is particularly worth a look but they are all good.

Me with a stone earlier in the year: It's angular shape makes it a lot easier on the arms than a round stone but similar feel on the back.

Any idea of the weight, Dave? Camera's distort, but it looks like over 60K? Maybe twice that?

That's really a very interesting and enlightening film, ganesha. I'm half way through it. I'll watch the rest tomorrow. I caught 265 lbs. and 252 lbs. on a couple of those lifting stones. Ancient Hawaiians lifted stones, as well.

I saw Stoneland on UK TV a couple of years ago. I was very surprised when it was broadcast, as normally we get pure tripe like Great British Bake Off, Great British Sewing Bee, Great British Knit a Jumper, etc, etc.

When I lived in England in 1973, I watched a hod-carrying competition on TV.

Any idea of the weight, Dave? Camera's distort, but it looks like over 60K? Maybe twice that? Honestly that one's pretty light, would guess not much more than 60-70? I had this little routine where I would lift that a few times, then do a few attempts with a bigger one. If I was still living back there, maybe I could have lifted the bigger one by now for a better photo, but life got in the way.

WSM 1994 had an overhead stone lift event: (should begin about 16:25)
In historical stonelifting in Scotland, there don't seem to be any records of people lifting them overhead. Instead, if a stone is too easy to lift up to the chest there are records of people showing off by throwing it a short distance (or ever a wall or something). In spite of this, Ayrshire's own Forbes Cowan makes a good showing.
