Hello fellow Board members,
Sometimes self resistance exercises are regarded as 'dynamic isometrics'. Why is that in my opinion some of the exercises are Isokinetic for example you clasp your hands together and push and then you move your arms up and down. But some of them are also Isotonic for example a typical bicep curl where your create the resistance for your biceps with your triceps. In my opinion that would be a typical Isotonic exercise. What is your opinion? In my opinion self resistance exercises are can be either Isokinetic or Isotonic and some of them pure Isometric. Am I right?

My opinion is that I don't care what you call them. If I'm doing self-resistance biceps curls/triceps pushdowns, I don't care if they are moving isometrics, isokinetics, isotnics, or horse feathers. I just focus and do them.

I agree with you Bruce.
Reading those old transformetrics workouts was like trying to decipher an alien language. Every simple exercise had some complex name.

Hey thanks for your answers. I definately got you on this but since self resistance training is great fun for me and actually I find it much more fascinating than traditional barbell training because it feels so pure. And therefore I just want to get in deeper the theoretical site of it. Since the bicep curl/tricep pushdown combination reassembles a weightlifting movement could you say that is an isotonic exercise? Just for my personal curiosity

Yes, if it moves it is isotonic. If it doesn't it is isometric. Isokinetic doesn't figure in to self-resistance.

No. Due to the nature of unavoidable variable loading with SR, it cannot be defined as being isotonic.
An exercise requires a constant load to be considered isotonic.

Great, now we can go on for a dozen pages trying to come up with just the right designation. As far as I'm concerned, if it moves, it's isotonic, and beyond that, try to imagine how little I care.
