For at least the last 30 years I had a split thumbnail. Every time it would start growing out, it would split in the middle down to my thumb. I have no idea what caused this, but it had been this way all this time. Last night I looked at my nails to give them a trim, and, lo and behold, my thumbnail was intact. It had grown back together - one solid thumbnail. It was like out of the blue. I started thinking of what changes I have made to cause this to happen. The only thing I've been doing differently is to take mega doses of vitamins C and D every day. Could this have fixed my thumbnail?

Vitamin C probably helped. The assortment of Vitamin Bs and collagen are also beneficial for nail health.

..... The only thing I've been doing differently is to take mega doses of vitamins C and D every day. Could this have fixed my thumbnail? 3G of C is my normal, but 200 mcg of D is 8K IU. My normal intake of D is 12K IU or 300 mcg (a bit less if I get good sun). When you say taking C and D is the ONLY thing you've been doing differently in the past few months, are you saying you haven't been wearing gloves more often? Not using hand sanitizer? Not washing your hands any extra amount? A treatment for toenail fungus is Tea Tree oil. Maybe hand sanitizer would kill it too? I don't know. However, since Vitamin C and D support the immune system, it could not have hurt.

Of course I've been doing those things, mikey. And face masks, too. Let's not forget face masks.

Of course I've been doing those things, mikey. And face masks, too. Let's not forget face masks. Exactly. The healing of your thumbnail could be due to the occasional, brief wearing of a face mask. Can't rule it out. Rebreathing our own waste products/moisture and CO2 for short periods can be beneficial - or so I've read. If I remember correctly(?), rebreathing our exhaled CO2, which we are designed to do to a lesser extent when airways are unrestricted by a mask, raises nitric oxide level(?). (Note: The facemask fad as virus protection makes no sense to me since the masks have holes which are way too large to catch virus particles anyway. It would be like thinking that an opening 100' high and 100' wide is too small to walk through. I've also read that communicating the CV does not happen by just the aerosolizing of breath. It requires more positive contact than that. From my experience over the past few months I can say that I believe that, but I can't defend it as true.)
Since our bodies are a system within and sharing the universe, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to determine with 100% certainty, what single factor has been introduced (or removed) from our life that was the actual cause of a health benefit or disease. You may also have stopped doing something that you were doing which may have healed your thumbnail or contributed to a change in condition. Any changes in; diet, face mask, gloves, hand sanitizer, hand washing, vitamin/mineral intake, environment (more smog/less smog, etc), digging fingernails into dirt, avoiding toxins in the air/food/water, exercise, etc, etc, etc. must be considered as what your body needed to heal the thumbnail. Any one, some combination or all of these factors and more could have allowed or enabled your body to heal your thumbnail and all must be considered as possibilities. It is easy to deceive ourselves by believing in our own bias of what we would like, wish, hope or expect the answer to be. I've been there and done that. I've learned that if I really want to discover what may be the factor that has effected a change in my body, I must, as much as possible, change only one thing at a time. Unfortunately, too often, "scientific"(ha!) tests are done and manipulated to give a predetermined and desired result when it's all been sorted out at the end. Lack of control is one of the reasons that I'm skeptical of so many studies that are advertised as being "scientific". Thank you for reading!

Just kidding, mr. spuds. Of course I read your post. Interesting conjectures. My feeling is that it is most likely what I've been ingesting. It feels funny now to run a finger over that thumbnail and not feel the split. It was never anything that particularly bothered me, it was just there. It's been so long now, but I believe it started when I hit my thumb with a hammer while building a deck when I was about 35.
