My choice was Andrew Yang, but I will have to vote Biden, even though I do not care for him, because he at least will defer to experts in the Covid 19 crisis and will surround himself with competent experts who will make rational plans. I could not vote for Trump as he doesn't listen to his experts, appoints incompetent people and has no plan in this crisis. He is loose on facts, spews nonsense and is narcissistic. He lacks the ability to make rational decisions and lead. He does not inspire confidence. The Democratics, in general, at least have a respect for science. The Republicans are too beholden to Christian evangelicals and conspiracy theorists. BAM!

What a sorry state of affairs when that's all the States can front for leadership challenge.
And where the election of the president seems to be based on the lesser of the two evils rather than the positives that each exhibit, where you can make your choice according to which of the said positives relate to yourself more.

Sleepy Joe Biden is going to throw a Hail Mary and pick a woman VP candidate. I hate to admit it but the country is still not ready for a female VP, even more so given Biden's questionable cognitive staying power in the unlikely event he would win (and here, I agree with Mag but you never know). It didn't work for Walter Mondale or John McCain and it didn't work for Crooked Hillary Clinton in reverse.
So, his choices are Elizabeth Warren (don't think she'll get it, angry white woman), Amy Klobucher (don't think she'll get it either, too short and too white), Kamala Harris (a California embarrassment but she's got the requisite skin color), Stacy Abrams (has the requisite skin color but is too fat and Americans don't want a fat and ugly woman as VP candidate), or, get this, Michelle Obama. The winning pickings are slim. Since he has already said it'll be a woman, he's boxed himself in to that corner and can't consider men who honestly would give him a better chance than what he currently has.
Sleepy Joe has a tall task ahead of him. He's got cognitive decline issues that are difficult to hide which means everyone considering him has got to consider that the VP choice may very well be our next President if he were to get elected by some slim chance. Having any one of them penis haters I listed above as our next President is enough to make even the most devoted Trump hater pinch their nose and give it to the Donald.
My two cents.

I'm still praying for Trump and I like his style. I feel like he is very aware that his term(s) as president will be prominent in history and, even if ego is was only reason, he will want to leave an historical memory of his management integrity with regard to his adherence to the Constitution and Nuremberg Code.

I have a serious sympathy re your comment "useless academic ne'er do wells" and anybody (like here) who is anti-the country they live in (in general, not the ones that try and hold Authority to their stated agendas to try and improve things for everybody) can simply sod off out of it, and go and live elsewhere and see if they get away with the same rhetoric in the country of their choice. Like for example a country where you can be hung for blasphemy, for a start.
I'm not sure about the "lazy socialists" description. Having been made redundant three times in less than ten years, I know how some feel regarding their morale and self-worth, particularly those that put in most of their working life and focus on a company that suddenly took their job off them and gave it to sweat-shop labour in China, India, or Mexico. Not that that stopped me, but I was in a different set of circumstances re looking after my wife the last time I was laid off, and I was lucky that the timing was right.
Bring the jobs back to the mainland and I think you have a better idea who the lazy bastards are. There's always a tiny minority that will milk the welfare system, but for many, their only sin was being in a job they loved that someone else could do in another country. I call them the Great Betrayed. You'll find them in trailer parks here too. A timely reflection could be on govts in our countries that were elected to protect the People but who allowed companies to take their employees' jobs off them and give them to other countries that are politically and socially different, which proves that the borders that you've commented on financially do not exist. It's a global market, but when the chips are down as they are now globally, it's up to each country's govt to handle the problem
I have also had quite a bit of varied experience with academic graduates who having spent four years getting a BA in rose garden display, majoring in sugar dispersal post-tipping, think they know it all, encouraged by the typical university bubble inhabitants where the lecturers and doctors of towel-rack design couldn't hold a job out in the real world if you chained them to it.
The whack-jobs are self-evident. One way or the other, they usually get back what they put in, like any other concerted effort.
I'm just wondering where the dynamic go-ahead younger (you know, 40-50 year old) men and women are. Aren't any of them up to presidency. Given Trump and Biden, what would be so hard to fit into the job ? And the American "royalty" like the Kennedy's and Bush's, the Clintons etc. Have they had their day ? Where's the B-cowboy movie stars ?

One thing I do like about Trump is that he grabs new ideas that he's thought up and runs with them, even sacking those silly experts who wouldn't know what time of the day it is.
I can imagine Donald's latest brilliant scheme as part of the restoration of the economy will be tax breaks for those that are on the verge of losing their jobs to foreign countries, instead being encouraged to follow said jobs and relocate in the country the job was going to, not only keeping the job but enjoying Trump's tax break which will be equivalent to their moving and setting up costs, passports etc, as well as the exotic ambience of the draughty sweat shop and filthy sub-standard food.
The added advantage to the American national economy is of course less jobless people around on the mainland, less drain on resources.
I'm also pretty sure Trump dismisses global warming as a hoax, and as usual he's right ! We need global warming. It's still snowing and freezing cold sometimes isn't it ? That will be another area where tax breaks can be aimed at those industries that are known to contribute to global warming. Everybody wins !

I’m looking forward to voting for Trump in November. I think he’s one of the best things to happen to the presidency since George Washington refused a lifetime appointment. We finally have a president who is not in the pocket of special interest groups, lobbyists, foreign governments, etc and actually knows and understands economics. In a little over 2 years Trump reversed the O’Bama depression with an economy that had more jobs than we could fill and empowered people to start getting off welfare and provide for themselves. Every one of his policies has been for the betterment of America and it’s citizens, especially the middle class. He has stood up to and backed down every communist dictator that crossed his path as opposed to an apology tour. He constantly runs circles around the media, yanking their chain and making them look foolish. He’s 2 steps ahead of the democrats and every time they think they have him in the cross hairs, it blows up in their face. I do hope Biden gets the nomination so the entire nation can see what a walking gaffe he is and it will be hysterical as Trump mops the floor with Biden at the debates.

Couldn't be said better mrdave100. People around the world who get their news from their sources don't often get wind of what you've shared which is what many Americans think both privately and publicly. He's the best America First cheerleader we've had as a President, possibly ever.

As I've said before, I'm sure Trump has done some good things, but as a billionaire himself much of what he has done has been to the benefit of large corporations in tax benefits etc.
In 2017, President Trump passed a millionaire-handout tax bill that gave companies like General Motors hundreds of millions of dollars in tax benefits. Said benefits were not used to create opportunities for employees or more jobs. As usual, they went into the pockets of the executives. He has also failed to bring back the jobs he said he would, as per his election promise.
And that underlines the main problem of America as we speak. America is not a democracy. It is a Plutocracy where a form of socialism is employed in govt protections for corporations and banks, but very little for the individuals who find their jobs taken from them and given to lower-paid equivalents in other countries. The number of bank bailouts and CEO's receiving insane Goodbye packages has not stopped, and if anything has been encouraged by Trump dishing out tax benefits to the very companies he promised to stop outsourcing etc.
I'm not against capitalism per se. But what has happened in America for a long time has still continued under Trump, despite his misleading comments to the media, often making a fool of himself in the process. That there seems to be no viable candidate in opposition is an indictment on the Parties themselves to co-ordinate a campaign that is coherent, and worthy of consideration. That Americans on here are talking about the "lesser of the two evils" is a very sorry state that American politics are in, and the reason for all that is the above.
American govts are heavily influenced by corporations and banks. They virtually run the show, as I've said in the past. They have no social responsibility and damage the American social and environmental structure without conscience.
It is Rampant Capitalism plain and simple, where economic strategies that involve outsourcing of American jobs to foreign countries are a DIRECT ATTACK on the sovereign rights of American citizens, the lack of social responsibilities of corporate decisions in the Boardroom often affecting whole towns that are suddenly bereft of the income their main employer has up until then been providing. Nor are said corporations held responsible for the damage they have done socially, and to the environment. As a member of the Big Money brigade, Trump has acted in support of all that.
Trump also has named himself a wartime president as I understand it. In that he has been a dismal failure. His reactions to the corona virus has been that of Denial, Dithering, and Delay. Today Worldometer reports 1,256,669 cases in the US, and 74,121 deaths. In fifteen weeks from a single case January 20th.
That is a disgrace in any man's terms and Trump and his cohorts have shown a lack of leadership in adversity. Any doubt about that is here :
1/22 We have it totally under control.
1/30 It’s one person coming in from China. We think we have it very well under control.
2/2 We pretty much shut it down coming in from China.
2/10 You know, in April, supposedly it dies with the hotter weather.
2/14 When it gets warm, historically, that has been able to kill the virus.
2/25 People are getting better, they’re all getting better.
2/27 And the 15 within a couple of days is gonna be down to close to zero.
2/28 It’s going to disappear, one day, it’s like a miracle. It will disappear and you’ll be fine.
3/2 They’re gonna have vaccines I think relatively soon
3/3 Not only the vaccines, but the therapies. Therapies is sort of another word for cure.
3/4 You’re talking about very small numbers in the United States.
3/6 Our numbers are lower than just about anybody.
3/10 It’s really working out, and a lot of good things are gonna happen.
3/11 And we are responding with great speed and professionalism.
3/12 It’s gonna go away.
3/13 No, I don’t take responsibility at all.
3/15 We’re all gonna all be great, we’re gonna be so good.
3/16 This came up, we came up so suddenly.
3/17 This is a pandemic. I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic, all you had to do was look at other countries.
And for another sample of moongazing, let's have his comment on 28th Feb at one of his rallies.
"The Coronavirus, you know that right? And this is their new hoax [Democrats, Nevertrumpers, fake news, CNN, etc]. We are 15 in this massive country. And because of the fact that we went early, we went early. We could had a lot more than that. We’re doing great, our country is doing so great."
Is anyone seriously not worried about having someone who talks like that as leader of their country ? And shouldn't Americans be worried that there is no viable opposition to Trump's re-election ?
Now with Trump obviously concentrating on his re-election campaign, and the Covid numbers climbing higher by the day in their thousands, I can see a great tragedy befalling America if ALL of the above is not addressed. In the absence of a suitable vaccine, at what point does the American economy collapse in the face of so many Covid 19 cases and deaths, the hospital and medical systems over-run, and more dying (I'm sure this has been the case already) due to cancellation of their important surgeries ?
In such a scenario, could the American economy be saved by being forced to engage wholesale influx of millions of skilled workers and professionals from overseas ? If so, "America" will only be a name, much as it is now anyway. USA should have been changed to USC long ago. The United States Of Corporations.
I hope I'm wrong, but the evidence is there for all to see. National total debt some 70 Trillion dollars, climbing by a million every 9 seconds, workers and even career engineers such as those ditched by Boeing re outsourcing, (the underlying reason I believe for those Max aircraft crashes), other countries increasing their influence inside America commercially ("border" control lost), and last but not least, a tricky virus which was never treated properly from the start, the experts ignored and /or removed from office.

Well we could go back and forth for weeks and not get anywhere, but as for your first statement about corporate tax cuts, I remember that. Corporations throughout the country made announcements how they were increasing the wages of workers. Trump is reversing the unfair corporate tax code and trade deals that have forced corporations and jobs to go over seas. You’re right about Socialism infiltrating our government, has been for a long time and America is headed for some dark days and possible civil war. Trump and his team responded immediately to Covid and has shown excellent leadership. Everyone of those statements were said, but taken out of context. My wife works in a health food store and for the first month or so, elderly people were coming into the store almost shaking because they were scared. Many of those statements were related to Trump assuring people we’re going to be okay, not because he has his head in the sand. He’s an optimist and believes in the resourcefulness, fortitude, and resilience of America and her citizens. Trump made decisions based on the world’s foremost authorities, unfortunately the data these experts relied on came from the same faulty models that they use to prove global warming.

Well I've said I am happy to be corrected in any statements that I make, and I agree that some of the Trump quotes I posted may have been to calm the people, but it's quite obvious that others in that list including his 28 Feb statement "Democratic hoax" is a study in moongazing, far beyond any excuse to be a calming measure.
Many people and commentators see many of those listed statements as outright lies. And given that any president of note MUST have good speaking skills (which Trump has) to be a motivational and charismatic leader, he must also tell the truth, and he and his administration did NOT react immediately to the Covid 19 threat, nor has he shown excellent leadership in the matter.
His changing statements through this crisis also do not show good evidence for competent management at all. Trump took over two months (seven weeks) to declare a national emergency after the first case, and today the numbers speak for themselves. There are other factors that played a part in those large and expanding numbers of cases and deaths, but Denial and Delay certainly played the biggest part because if those first cases were immediately quarantined and treated as best as medical staff could do, then the lack of masks, ventilators and other resources wouldn't have been an issue. It was a pandemic that shouldn't have been, any way you look at it. The delay caused by Trump's denial and dithering lays 74,000 deaths at his feet, something which he refuses to take responsibility for.
His dictatorial style is another problem which has seen more staff turnover that the past five presidents, and his attempts to quash the media is the hallmark of a dictator. "fake news" and the media being labeled the "enemy of the people" is another warning that Trump is not prepared to accept any criticism whatsoever, and his sackings of those that had some issues that didn't fall into line with his actions, and the hiring of those on the basis of loyalty rather than competence and qualifications is another hallmark of a dictator that surrounds himself with "yes-men".
Another indication of a dictatorship is the demonizing of his "enemies", and his interference in affairs which he should have kept out of. The resignation of prosecutors and judges are testament to frustration at not being able to do their jobs properly under Trump, even those supporting him. The southern border wall is one of the biggest laughs in the world today, but his detention centres are a shocking disgrace, where would-be illegal immigrants are in unsanitary and overcrowded conditions, and children not only isolated from their parents, but kept in cages as well.
At the same time, the fundamental problems caused by American corporates and banks' influence on govt have not been addressed, and my bet is that they won't be under ANY president unless they are all dragged kicking and screaming to task by a financial/military national emergency. The state of the union as it is today has not changed these greedy people that run said corporates and banks, and nothing will change them until they are forced into it. As you say Dave, America (and therefore countries like NZ) are in for some dark days, and I can see military action inside the US of some sort, ultimately the result as it's always been historically, of a relatively impoverished majority taking up resolute action against the wealthy minority, the "2%".
Whatever positive things that Trump may have done, he has not done enough in a situation that is creeping up on America in more ways than one, and one of those terrible situations that Trump will not be able to resolve, simply because his re-election depends largely on funding and support from the very corporations and banks that have placed America in the situation it finds itself today, a state of constant war, inequality among the super-rich and the newly poor, virtual dictatorship of its leader, financial debt unpayable, contributing a quarter of the world's pollution therefore climate change, and lack of democratic interaction and/or opposition, Trump seeing himself as always being right, even against expert advice.
