We did a seven mile hike yesterday. Just gf and I. A CDC compliant hike:

Do your knees feel it more on the descent than the ascent? If know mine did when I ran down hills as opposed to up hills.

I love hiking and climbing. Many benefits besides the fitness. Probably have near 1000 hikes done here in Vegas, some in Utah, and California.
Even with this Coronavirus issue, we still get out 2-3 weekly. Don’t hike with groups for now, just the two of us. My gf is overly cautious, so all our hikes are CDC compliant.

With stairs, I find going up gives me some knee discomfort. I wrecked my knees is a couple of motorbike accidents in the 1980s, which is how I got into going to the gym. Slow and steady works on stairs for me. I used to hike a lot when I lived in Australia. One day, I am going to walk the entire Heysen Trail. I've walked bits of it, but I would like to do it in one go.
I have walked quite a lot of the Offa's Dyke Path on the Welsh border. It is quite a long drive to get there before I start, but great scenery. I've never had the urge to do that one in one go - it always heaves down with rain when I go to Wales.

Bruce, it was beautiful. It was sunny, no wind, and the temperature near 60.

MBS you may be the luckiest man alive. When she tells you to go take a hike she says it in a loving way and often accompanies you. Wow
