It's perfectly possible to count reps and not be distracted, chase a number at all costs etc. Plus it helps you to kniw when you have improved. For example, maybe I am doing a set of press with 60kg. It is getting very difficult at 6 reps, but I know I have done 8 once - that can be enough to override my imminent failure and allow me a reo or two more. All psychological, but still valid

I do a lot of rep counting or counting time for different exercises. I am an old guy and I don’t train to failure much anymore. I might test my max rep or time from time to time. I find it almost meditative to count reps. This morning I did the bullworker and counted 1001, 1002 … 1010 (for 10 seconds) and then keep the tension while I inhaled and on the exhale tried to relax everything except the muscles involved in the exercise and then relax. At this point I am more concerned with consistency.
