Caught this on Netflix last night and decided to give it a watch. Initial comments:
1. Bodybuilding and drugs are out of control. Even the stars from the 80s and 90s -- Rich Gaspari, for example -- called out the drugs and current physiques vs. days gone by. Jay Culter said he preferred his physique pre-Mr. Olympa as he wasn't driven to simply put on size for the sake of size.
2. Abs -- or no abs, I should say. None of the Olympia-level stars had abs or could do a vacuum pose that would even come close to Zane. All of them had mid-sections that were so swollen from the drugs that they clearly stuck out further than their pecs.
3. Open discussions regarding injuries, liver damage, kidney damage. Many of the bodybuilders spoke openly of the injuries that have left so many permanently injured and in some crippled. (Not mentioned by name, but, Ronnie Coleman's confined to a wheelchair as one example.)
4. The late Rich Piana is featured heavily in the movie. Only aware of him after the news of his death hit the web, but, people like Lee Haney, Rich Gaspari and many others pointed to him and others like Piana as one of the big problems with bodybuilding. Many reasons, but, they had no use for what Piana did. Also, he looked like he was using synthol in his arms...absolutely huge and when he was working his arms in a couple of scenes, they really didn't seem to do much of anything.
5. The seedy underside of bodybuilding dating back to its origins in Physical Culture is openly discussed. Iris Kyle, 10x Ms. Olympia, talked about the prostitution and sex films many of her peers are involved in because it was either expected and/or needed to pay the bills. Calum von Moger, a new star from Australia, was asked about the topic and he said it is quite prevelent to include personal solicitations. The T-Nation website had series on this several years ago and even bodybuilders that were big stars at the time were named.
It is sad to see what bb'ing is currently all about and most of the stars we grew up feel the same way.

Apparently Rich Piana announced a huge drug cycle before he passed away:
Allegedly he was using PMMA...explains the synthol look:

Check out around 10:00 for the bubble guts, as the narrator notes:

Enjoyed watching those videos. The gaggle of Mr. O contenders over the last decade and more, look absolutely ridiculous. You couldn't pay me enough to want to look like that. To get to those sizes isn't even a desire anymore, it's an all-consuming obsession.

Personally I do not care, it is their lives to choose how they want to live. What is the difference between people taking roids etc.. and people who decide to force so much food down themselves, that overtime leads to the being so huge that they cannot walk etc... Yes bodybuilders etc.. take roids but at least they are not killing, mugging old people or robbing to pay for their habits like other druggies.
I have no sympathy for them, but I do not live in a blinkered world that believes, roids etc.. do not happen. Tell me what is the difference between a bodybuilder dying or being crippled, than a nascar driver being crippled or killed or a boxer and so on... They are all choosing to gamble with their life.
Lets look at it another way, thousands of people chose to join the army for example and during the ocupation of Afghanistan many have ended up dead or have missing limbs etc.. due to IED's All these people knew the dangers when joining up.

Got a point, there, blaggietoes. But, this is a fitness site, and those videos relate to our interest - fitness. The Mr. Olympia competition isn't even a physical culture contest anymore, it is a freak show. As far as I'm concerned, this guy still stands today as an ideal: Yeah, yeah. I know.

There are lots of tremendous, athletic physiques that deserve kudos.
From Atlas' era, I think we've discussed other individuals that some of us felt warranted more recognition. Pandour was one that I thought set the standard; there are folks on the Beachbody Success Story pages of all ages with some exceptional results.

I know this is a fitness sight, but IMO bodybuilding has nothing to do with strength or fitness. Maybe it did 80 years ago, but it is more about cosmetic looks than anything else.
I am not knocking texas for starting this thread, just giving my opinion.

View any cover shots from strength and health magazine pre 1940 and you'll see lots of great roll models.

Blaq - I think the current trends (at least here in the US) reflect a small but growing backlash against the whole "bodybuilding" and "Physical Culture" mindset. Some possible examples: - Crossfit is growing in popularity in a big way...we've got three CF gyms in my town and unless you're in a truly rural area in the US, you'd be hard pressed not to run across one even in small towns. - Orange Theory is similar to CF and it seems to be popular amongst the "millennial" group. - Several 'functional' training clubs -- eg boxing clubs focused on a mix of conditioning + boxing workouts. - There are two yoga studios within two miles of my house that opened up in the last couple of years. I stopped in to check out the 'hot yoga' studio and a lot of the newer clients, per the manager, are men/women with CF injuries. (The ladies I saw there would have been worth the price to sign up and attend a class with... and embarrass the hell out of myself. ) - Of course, you had the anti-weight training and BW trend started by Matt Furey in the very late 1990s/early 2000s, Pavel's Power to the People and KB training during that era and Ross' books which combined the two into more functional fitness. Also here in the US, the Beachbody group out of California also had a big influence for a while...the P90X before/after results showing up on infomercials nearly 7 x 24 drove that company into the hundreds of millions in revenues and got people doing pushups, chins and yoga. Most of the people in GenIron 2 movie acknowledge that bodybuilding is more of a cult than ever and it will never attain the status of (US) pro football, baseball or hockey. Probably the same in other parts of the world. One person mentioned the size at all costs physiques are just making the freak show issue even worse as are personalities like Piana, DoggCrapp and others. Add the deaths, damage to internal organs and severe injuries that the film final admits to.

Woody Allen .... took estrogen in huge amounts. Put a white witches' wig on him and he'd kind of resemble JP doing "Hindu Squats"...
