Texad, great stats that you had in your post, the risk reward when sprinting vs walking is not worth it.

The original question here was whether or not walking is an effective means of losing weight, and based upon my personal experience, and others here, the answer is, yes.
However, I'm too old to sprint or jog, so I don't. But that's not to say that sprinting or jogging aren't also effective means of burning calories. Of course they are. And if someone is young and has no joint issues and enjoys running, then, by all means, do so. When I was a teenager, I loved to run. Sometimes I would run from one place to another rather than walking just to see how quickly I could get there. I was capable of easily running for miles.

2 thumbs way up for brisk walking . There are safer ways to achieve the "sprint effect"(brief, intense efforts that approach max heart rate) rather than extreme fast running

The author of that piece also hosts the No S Diet website (and wrote the book): www.nosdiet.com/He also has the ShovelGlove website: www.shovelglove.com/Don't recall his whole background, but, he lives in a big city here in the US and is an apartment dweller and I believe he's a techno-geek involved in the software industry (may be 100% wrong on this one). The No S Diet is actually a pretty good little idea if you haven't seen it...has been around since the early 2000s, if I recall, and its based on the stuff grandma or mom used to enforce with many of us growing up: 1. No snacks. 2. No second helpings. 3. No sweets (except on special days). Lots of validation from the world of science to back this up. And apparently the combined diet + workout has worked well for some people ( "It’s amazing what a little effort & determination can do. Today I’m officially 20kgs less than my highest weight, I don’t think I’ve been this tiny since I was about 15, and I’ve sure as hell never had abs like this!! ") : 4.bp.blogspot.com/-NObxfUIcWTs/VQlXASh3RmI/AAAAAAACq0I/SwW6cXfHQoc/s1600/Screenshot%2Bfrom%2B2015-03-18%2B17%3A43%3A30.png They both make sense, but the other one made as much sense, as using a seat belt instead of cardio or using living strength will heal your joints. When you said they are from the US, I thought oh my god I Robot must have been a documentary rather than a work of fiction. (rofl)

I think both walking and sprinting are good and I like to do both. I also like running for extended periods (30-60mins) as well as riding my bike. All great cardio. I walk to the railway station every morning and I walk back home again. It's only about 8 minutes but it's still cardio, especially in the morning when I am invariably cutting it fine to catching the train. Mind you, even though I rush every morning, the train is always late, so I don't know why I bother.
I don't sprint very often these days, but sometimes I'll do it. I'm not really built for running - I've got short legs but they still reach all the way down to the ground, so it's not a big problem. That's why I always preferred longer periods in my running. Seemed easier and I good lope along at about 1/2 Olympic pace. I don't run much these days - my knees don't really like it. The "secret" to running is, I think, decent shoes. I swear by Sorbothane in mine.
Over the last 6 months, most of my cardio has been skipping. I do short bursts (300 turns of the rope) between weight sets. I'm no thinner but my aerobic fitness is pretty good.
