As we age, it's important to build a strong and flexible mace to avoid injury.

What was he wondering about, Carol m8? Good call, I just used the wrong spelling. I imagine afterwards he was wandering where his sledgehammer went... Sorry, I meant wondering. It's a wander I don't get that wrong more often.

HERE's a link to the thread titled "Beginner Power Clubs Workout". This is the " Articles" page on Richard "Army" Maguire's, Ageless Strength, website. Lots of content, both photos and text, about Persian club swinging worth viewing there. He also has videos that can be found on youtube. As he says on the FAQ page of his website,

I was looking for info on a DIY hammer like the ones used for throwing in the Olympics or Highland Games when I found this.
How to swing a sledge hammer:

That's an interesting video with the sledge hammer. First thing I'll say is I wouldn't use a sledge for exercise because it would remind me of work. For me a sledge is for work. I don't see any reason for an every day guy to use a sledge for exercise because there is a high potential for injury. The thing I like about what this guy is showing is that he's using a small sledge, 8lbs. Most guys that use sledges for exercise think bigger is better. To me it's not. If I was to use a sledge for exercise I would mostly be looking for conditioning. Smaller would give You more conditioning. The guys that use the heavy sledges kind of make me laugh. I use a 16lb sledge at work to pound metal post in the ground. Because I've done it so much I never really paid attention to everything I do. From memory some things I may do different is I believe I don't stand square. I usually have my right foot back. I don't swing much from the left side because I suck at hitting the poles from that side, . When I swing it I use the same concept as a KB swing, using my hips as in hinge at the hips. Another thing I notice in this video is him swinging it over head. I remember when I first started doing the job I'm doing I seen one of the guys swinging it overhead like that. The first thought I had was there goes his rotator cuffs. He's had two surgeries on both shoulders and he can't even think about using a sledge. For work I don't swing my sledge overhead, never had an injury from a sledge or axe.

From memory some things I may do different is I believe I don't stand square. I usually have my right foot back. I don't swing much from the left side because I suck at hitting the poles from that side, Lol. When I swing it I use the same concept as a KB swing, using my hips as in hinge at the hips. Another thing I notice in this video is him swinging it over head. I remember when I first started doing the job I'm doing I seen one of the guys swinging it overhead like that. For work I don't swing my sledge overhead, never had an injury from a sledge or axe. Using a sledge for exercise is not the same as using one for post driving work. When driving posts, the target is much smaller and the face of the hammer is only about 2.5" to connect, so it's all about accuracy. Therefore, it probably works best to use a heavy sledge to let IT's weight do the work while you concentrate on hitting the target. Since i don't need to be at all concerned about accuracy, I can concentrate on delivering the force by crunching the downswing (I like that feeling of pulling down), which you probably don't do when you're trying to be accurate. He's right on about breathing too, inhale as it's raised up and exhale as it's brought down. No holding of breath. I haven't used my sledge for a while, but this video gives me a nudge. I do it much like he does, 10 hits per side before switching hands/sides, until I've done about 40 hits per side. It's fun for me, but then it's not my job either.

Are You hitting a tire or something else? No matter what, nice session! Yes, a tire. Yes, if done like he says in that video, it's a good exercise. The one I like to use has a smooth fiberglass/poly(?) handle without any rubber in grip area. It's smooth from head to butt which allows my hand to slide down like it would on a wooden handle.
