For years off and on I've worked my neck in various ways from doing headstand neck stretches to self resistance, bridging and bridging gymnastics and so far managed to build an 18 inch neck.
I have never used weights for building my neck and although there is a neck harness you can attach cables to for specifically training the neck, I just have stuck with using my own body.
On a consistent level for what has worked well for me and never sustained injuries or concussions this is what I have done....
Self resistance neck exercises going from side to side, the turning of the head, up and down and circular movements....And the Front & Back bridges for three minutes each with the latter bridge with nose to the mat, feet flat and hands off the ground. This works very well for me. I also often do headstands against the wall and move my neck in various directions. It is not meant for people with a weak neck and it takes a lot to build up to. I have never been injured from this as well.
Along with the bringing gymnastics, it's something I like to do from time to time and have been able to fall back into a bridge, kick over and back on many occasions. Once did a workout doing up to 30 kickovers and kickbacks. I've even used them in my BJJ and used my neck to get out of holds even when someone had them on tight.
This way of training has been very helpful in my life and even taught it to my girl and she has gotten good at bridges, not the kickovers or the falling into a bridge, she is nowhere near ready for that and I don't think I'll ever teach her that.
Never experienced pain from this and when I had little issues, they didn't last long and I recovered pretty quickly. Sometimes a chiropractic adjustment is helpful.
Most aren't a fan of bridges and stay away far from them which is ok, there are other ways to train the neck safely. I also do a method of chi Kung specifically for the neck and felt amazing from it.
Having a big neck is just a bonus but I'm happy with what it helps prevent and has helped me in other areas of training.
